“The Kākāpō
This beautiful bird is native to Aotearoa & is crucially endangered with a count of only around 247. It is the world’s heaviest & only flightless parrot.Last year I felt a strong calling to learn more about them & create a painting. Little did I know the different variety of feathers, colors & textures would make it one of the most changing birds I’ve done.In learning about them I decided to “adopt” the smallest Mumma in their recover program named Marama. She inspired me to make this painting & to help spread awareness. These birds only breed every 2-4 years & it is currently their breeding season! I’ve been following @kakapo_recovery to see all the beautiful new lil chicks hatching & it’s been so exciting seeing the different stages & learning about them.Marama has successfully had one chick this year 🙏”
